Exploring Vernal (Temporary) Ponds: This program is for adults, teens, and children ages 6 and older.

Program Leader: Jake Kushner, SOFO Environmental Educator

Vernal ponds are ephemeral—or temporary—seasonal wetlands that dry up at some time during the year. They form in depressions in the earth and are often found in forest settings. They range in size from puddles to shallow lakes. Of utmost importance is that these ponds, or pools, are absent of fish and are therefore home to what are called obligate species—organisms and species that are completely dependent on these ponds for parts of their life cycle. Join Jake to learn about vernal ponds and find out what organisms and species use these ponds as essential breeding habitats to begin their life cycle.

There is a $15 fee for Adults and $10 fee for children for this program. Members are free.

Advanced reservations are required for all events. To register for this program, please contact us at info@sofo.org.
