Introducing: The Shark Shack!
The Shark Shack is a joint pilot project between SOFO and the Southampton Teachers Association (STA) to increase awareness and appreciation for sharks found in our local waters. The project is made up of Southampton High School (SHS) students and teachers, researchers, and museum educators. Our pop-up Shark Shack will be setup throughout Suffolk County, providing information and hands-on educational resources about the sharks found off Long Island. The Shark Shack will also educate participants about the cutting edge science being conducted by SOFO and its partners, as well as provide practical advice for safely enjoying our world-famous beaches.
Basic beach safety tips include:
-
Avoid areas with schools of fish.
-
Avoid swimming at dusk, night, and dawn.
-
Avoid swimming if birds are diving and/or if dolphins and whales are in the area.
-
Avoid murky water.
-
Swim, paddle, and surf in groups.
-
Stay close to shore, where your feet can touch the bottom.
-
Limit your time in the water.
-
Avoid spending time on sandbars or near riprap.
-
Always follow the instructions of lifeguards and beach staff.
