Program Presenter: John Papajohn, Crew Leader, Southampton Town Trustees Threatened and Endangered Species Program.

Join the Southampton Town Trustees Threatened and Endangered Species Crew Leader John Papajohn for an important update about the conservation status of piping plovers and least terns in Southampton Town.  Piping plovers and least terns are both species currently under the protection of the migratory bird treaty act as well as state conservation law. The piping plover is listed as threatened in the northeast Atlantic range by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and listed as endangered by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation the least tern is listed as threatened by the New York State DEC.  During this program John will describe measures being taken to protect nesting plovers and terns and will give a synopsis of the season including the success of nesting birds on our beaches. This program is important for everyone who lives or spends time in the Hamptons in the summer months. Understanding the reasoning behind plover/tern fencing and how it is making a difference in the conservation effort are the first steps in creating a safer environment for these important species. Join us and find out what you can do to help make a difference!
