The Chickadee’s World: A Walk at the Elizabeth Morton National Wildlife Refuge with John Turner

Walk Leader: John Turner, environmental educator, advocate, author and SOFO Board of Directors member.

The Black-capped chickadee is one of the more familiar and common songbirds found on Long Island. But this small and modest songbird has a not-so-well-known and fascinating life history and possesses a set of abilities that enable it to thrive here – like “growing” its brain in the winter! We’ll see chickadees up close and personal as the tame population at Morton readily takes unsalted sunflower seeds from your hand. Come join SOFO for this family fun experience. This program is for adults, teens, and children age 8 and older

John has written articles for magazines including Defenders, Birder’s World, Long Island Forum, Bird Watcher’s Digest, Networking Magazine, and The Conservationist. He is the author of a popular Long Island nature guide “Exploring the Other Island: A Seasonal Nature Guide to Long Island” (2nd Edition) and a children’s book “Waylon’s Wandering Waterdrop”. He and his wife run Alula Birding and Nature Tours.

There is a $10 fee for Adults and $7 fee for children for this program. Members are free.

Please note that, as mandated by the latest State Executive Order regarding COVID-19 safety precautions, our outdoor nature walks and programs will at all times follow stringent six-feet distancing separation protocols required by the Department of Health for the safety of our participants and environmental educators. We will provide masks and gloves for all attendees.

Advanced reservations are required for all events. To register for this program, which has limited enrollment please contact us at info@sofo.org or call 631-537-9735. Spots will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis.
