Marine Adventure Week II

*****FULL*****

For children 6 – 8 years of age

Program runs Monday through Friday August 10 – 14, 2015

Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The Peanut Bunker program is an exciting ways to get children interested in marine ecosystems.  Your child will experience multiple adventures exploring new themes with hands on learning experiences at different field sites each day.  While wading or seining in eel grass beds, he or she will use all their senses to obtain information about the various organisms that live in this environment.  Your child will understand how organisms protect themselves by observing these animals in their natural habitats.  When walking on the beach or wading through a salt marsh, they will identify plants and animals using field guides.  They will also understand how different organisms help each other survive in these environments.  Local fish will be examined internally and externally during a fish dissection.  Survival interaction between organisms and their environments will be explored.  Finally, your child will become a marine biologist for a day and participate in research- sampling, using scientific instruments on a SUNY Stony Brook Marine Research Vessel. The last day of the program, you and your family are invited to bring a picnic lunch and join the group at one of the field sites.

Sea Bass

Marine Biology and Fishing Week

*****FULL*****

For children 9 – 11 years of age

Program runs Monday through Friday August 17 – 21, 2015

Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The Sea Bass program is a Marine Biology and Fishing Adventure week. Your child will understand how organisms protect themselves by observing shelled animals and fish in their natural habitats. While digging for clams, visiting an active oyster farm field site, observing oceanic fish at a commercial fishing dock, and fishing for snapper and larger fish with rod and reel they will observe and identify local finfish and shellfish species.  Local fish and shellfish will be examined internally and externally during dissections.

Exploration sites are in East Hampton and Southampton and will vary daily.  We ask you to drop off and pick up your child at these designated locations.  Specific site locations and supply list will be provided one month prior to the start of the program.  We ask that a parent or guardian stay for a brief introduction on the first day of your child’s program. Please register your child for the week that is appropriate for his or her age group.   Due to limited class size (twelve participants per week) and popularity of the program, sessions may fill up quickly.  Sign up early and include completed Application, Environmental Education Release, Medical/Consent Form and Payment.

Forms will be available for download on March 14, 2015.
