“Plovers taste like chicken!” is the phase you often hear when piping plovers are mentioned on Long Island. These endangered birds, along with the New York State Threatened Least Terns, get a bad reputation around the beaches of Long Island due to fenced off areas on the beach and beach closures. Yet, these species are an integral part of our coastal ecosystems. Join us for a walk and discussion on the life history and importance of these birds, the protocols in place to protect them, and the environmental and human impacts affecting these beautiful creatures. At this time of year, piping plovers and least terns may be on eggs or have chicks running around, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for “hidden” nests and chicks. Binoculars are encouraged – SoFo will provide some, but numbers are limited.
Advance reservations are required for all events. For more information, reservations, and directions to meeting places, please call: (631) 537-9735.
