This Week’s Species of the Week … The Blue-spo

This Week’s Species of the Week … The Blue-spotted Salamander!

In New York, this species can only be found in its pure genetic form right here on the East End of Long Island in Montauk's vernal pools.

This population of salamanders is a glacial relic from when Long Island was formed thousands of years ago, preserved by Montauk being an isolated peninsula.

It is one of four mole salamanders found here on the south fork, spending the majority of their lives underground.

Not your ordinary #whitetaildeer! There are about one in a thousand deer that have this condition known as #piebald or #partiallyleucistic.

It is rare to see one, but they are more common than the extremely rare albino deer. It's a genetic abnormality, found in most animals causing patches of white across its body.
