Workshop Leader: Mare Dianora, local teaching artist, teaching workshops in schools, art centers and healthcare settings. Most recently, her community quilt workshop was hosted at the Southampton Arts Center in NY as well as in Nogales, AZ and Huntsville, AL.
In this workshop children will discuss and design architecture, using LEGOs, to fit the needs of society as we face rising seas resulting from global warming. Using the information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that “sea level can rise by two different mechanisms with respect to climate change. First, as the oceans warm due to an increasing global temperature, seawater expands—taking up more space in the ocean basin and causing a rise in water level. The second mechanism is the melting of ice over land, which then adds water to the ocean.
Using their innate creative aptitude participants will seek imaginative ways to design architecture for the future while learning the underlying facts about sea level rise. We will have lots of LEGOs for the children to use.
