Please bring binoculars if you have them (we will have a few pairs to lend) and a field guide to birds of the eastern United States. If you don’t have a field guide\, we’ll have one here for you to use. \nClub Leader: Aidan Perkins\, Wildlife Biologist \nThis FREE program is for children and adults ages 8-18. Advanced reservations are required for all events. \n  \n Sign Up Here!\n

SUMMARY:The Secret Life of a Pond: Life Cycles and Survey of Freshwater Invertebrates
DESCRIPTION:When we stand at the edge of a pond\, we tend to notice the larger animals like frogs\, turtles\, and birds. But why do those animals choose to live at or visit the pond? We would need to get in the water to see the multitude of smaller animals that keep a pond healthy\, but mud would be easily stirred up by a diver or ROV. Join Crystal after she has collected pond water in a variety of containers\, with plenty of time for mud to settle and creatures to start moving and help collect and identify the secret life in the pond with a variety of magnifiers and microscopes. This pop-up exhibit will be held the first Sunday of the month\, April through September\, so stop by to see how pond life changes through spring and summer! \nProgram Leader: Crystal Possehl-Oakes\, SOFO Outdoor Education Specialist \nThis program is for children ages 7 and up\, in Grades 1-12. \nFor non-members\, there is a $15 fee for adults and a $10 fee for children for this program. This program fee will also provide non-members with free admission to the museum on a day of their choice. Members are free. SUMMARY:Horseshoe Crab Survey & Tagging with Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE)
DESCRIPTION:From mid-May to June\, thousands of horseshoe crabs have gathered at Long Island’s bay beaches. It’s an incredible sight to see-  made more so in the light of the full moon. The horseshoe crabs are there to bury their eggs in the sand; their eggs provide food for seabirds to fuel themselves on their long spring migration journeys north along the East coast of North America. The use of horseshoe crabs by humans for fishing bait and the harvesting of their blood for use in testing human medicines has an impact on the horseshoe crab population numbers. Data needs to be collected to document and assess the status of horseshoe crabs in our waters. You can help! Join SOFO and CCE to assist in collecting information for this study\, while you witness one of nature’s most amazing annual wildlife events. \nWalk Leader: Sydney Mantione\, SOFO Environmental Educator\, and Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) \nThis FREE program is for all ages. SUMMARY:Hoodoos and Other Curious Geologic Features of Montauk Point
DESCRIPTION:While Earth is 4.5 billion years old\, Long Island is only about 11\,000. Why is it such a geologically young area? How did it form? Why aren’t there any mountains? The answer? Glaciers! Evidence of Long Island’s origins can be seen all around us\, but one of the best spots to find it is at Montauk Point. Learn about moraines\, hoodoos\, erosion from waves and weather\, erratic cobbles\, and more geology on this exciting educational hike at Shadmoor State Park. \nWalk Leader: Tommy Steinbrecher\, SOFO Environmental Educator \nFor non-members\, there is a $5 fee per person for this program. SUMMARY:Bluebird Walk at Quail Hill Farm
DESCRIPTION:Quail Hill Farm is the perfect place to look for a wide variety of birds with its mature apple orchard\, mixed hedgerows\, and open fields. This walk\, led by avid birder Frank Quevedo of SOFO\, includes the possibility of seeing our New York State bird\, the Eastern Bluebird\, near our bluebird boxes\, installed throughout the farm. We’ll explore portions of the fields\, woodland edges and old growth trees around the property\, part of an assemblage of over 200 acres of land protected by the Trust in partnership with Deborah Ann Light. SUMMARY:The Mills & The Meadow: Hosted at the Water Mill Museum & Corwith Windmill
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a collaboration between SOFO\, the Bridgehampton Museum\, and the Water Mill Museum as we converge on one historic hamlet to explore the intersection of science\, engineering\, and local heritage.
