SUMMARY:The Mills & The Meadow: Hosted at the Water Mill Museum & Corwith Windmill
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a collaboration between SOFO\, the Bridgehampton Museum\, and the Water Mill Museum as we converge on one historic hamlet to explore the intersection of science\, engineering\, and local heritage. From wind-driven gears to coastal ecology\, join us to see how the forces of nature and human ingenuity shaped the East End. \n\nThe Engineering (Corwith Windmill): Led by the Bridgehampton Museum\, step inside the 1800-era Corwith Windmill. Discover the sophisticated wooden gear systems and aeronautic principles early settlers used to harness the wind. It’s a masterclass in pre-industrial mechanical engineering.\nThe Science and Natural History: Bridgehampton Museum brings the surrounding landscape to life. Learn about the “science of the site”—from the wind and water that power the mills to the local flora and fauna that have shared this ecosystem for centuries.\nThe History (Water Mill Museum): Explore the broader industrial story of the South Fork. As the keepers of the neighboring water-powered grist mill\, the Water Mill Museum provides the context of how these mechanical innovations transformed a rural farming outpost into a thriving community.\n\nCo-sponsored with SOFO\, the Sag Harbor Whaling Museum\, Bridgehampton Museum\, and Water Mill Museum \nTour Leaders: Rachel Verno\, Director Water Mill Museum and Stacy Myers\, Educator\, Bridgehampton Museum \nThis FREE program is for adults\, teens\, and children ages 8 and up. Advanced reservations are required for all events.

SUMMARY:Seining for Bay Animals with SOFO
DESCRIPTION:Join us in pulling a seine net at the shore to see what fish and crabs are making their home there! In the shallow waters of the bay\, young fish\, crabs\, and other marine invertebrates find food and shelter until they grow large enough to move into deeper waters. This nursery is an important resource for fish that people like to eat and for the equally important small fish that the bigger fish need for food. We’ll learn about food webs and sieve the sandy mud to see what other invertebrates are hiding there. \nProgram Leaders: Sydney Mantione and Tommy Steinbrecher\, SOFO Environmental Educators \nThis program is for all ages. For non-members\, there is a $5 fee per person for this program. Members are free. Advanced reservations are required for all events.
