SUMMARY:Observing Ospreys
DESCRIPTION:You may have noticed the many Osprey nests around the East End where the adult ospreys have been busy raising their young since the eggs hatched in late May or early June. The female does most of the incubating or sitting on the eggs\, and the male brings fish for all of them. By early July\, the oldest osprey chicks are big enough to start exercising their wing muscles while still on their nest. By late July\, with their parents perched in a nearby tree whistling encouragement to the young birds\, they begin to fly out of the nest under their own wing power. If we are lucky\, we may see a fledgling stretching its wings on the edge of its nest! \nSouthampton Town Beach Parking Permit or daily parking fee required. \nWalk Leader: Melanie Meade\, SOFO Education Director \nThis program is for adults\, teens\, and children ages 8+. \nFor non-members\, there is a $15 fee for adults and a $10 fee for children for this program. This program fee will also provide non-members with free admission to the museum on a day of their choice. Members are free. SUMMARY:Sunlight & Shadow─Building Your Own Sundial with William Francis Taylor
DESCRIPTION:For thousands of years\, people have used sundials as a clock that never requires batteries or winding up—only a clear\, sunny day. Learning how a sundial works teaches us how the sky around us moves and orients our lives in both time and space. Students in this workshop will be invited to build their own sundials from simple materials\, gaining the knowledge they need to design dials suited to their own homes and gardens. Solar viewing via telescope may follow the program. Materials fee: $5 (paid at the door). \nCo-sponsored by SOFO and Hamptons Observatory (https://hamptonsobservatory.org/). \nProgram Leader: William Francis Taylor\, NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador\, MSc. \nThis FREE program is for adults\, teens\, and children ages 6+. SUMMARY:Gaelin Rosenwaks Presents: Studying the Ocean from Plankton to Sperm Whales!
DESCRIPTION:For centuries\, we have been fascinated by the sperm whale\, the world’s largest toothed predator. Like many of our co-inhabitants on the planet\, sperm whales were nearly hunted to the brink of extinction. While the most famous sperm whale of all is Moby Dick\, it was a young male nicknamed Physty—who fell ill in the early 1980s and came ashore just off Long Island\, New York that captured the heart of Gaelin Rosenwaks and started her on a career in marine science—studying\, protecting\, and documenting the world’s most marvelous ocean species. In her new book\, SPERM WHALES: THE GENTLE GOLIATHS OF THE OCEANS (Rizzoli\, 2022)\, Rosenwaks gives you a beautiful look at these magnificent animals. \nIn her presentation\, Gaelin will take you on a journey from satellite tagging Bluefin Tuna in the Western Atlantic Ocean to drilling ice cores in the frozen Bering Sea to the bottom of the Blue Hole in Belize\, in order to illuminate cutting-edge scientific research being conducted to understand the complexity of our ocean ecosystems. Gaelin hopes to heighten people’s awareness and sense of responsibility to preserve the health of our planet. \nProgram Leader: Gaelin Rosenwaks\, Marine Scientist\, Filmmaker\, and Author \nThis FREE program is for adults\, teens\, and children 10+.
