SUMMARY:Annual Decorate a Holiday Tree for the Birds
DESCRIPTION:Feeding wild birds in winter is especially important in our area\, where development has removed a good deal of natural winter food resources for local birds. Join the SOFO staff in what has become a holiday tradition and make bird-friendly decorations for a holiday tree using seeds\, dried fruits\, and some surprising additions. You’ll also be able to make some of these treats to take home and use as decorations on your own “holiday tree” for the birds. Bring a shoebox or shopping bag to take home some of your decorations. Material fee: $5 per participant \nProgram Leader: Moe Kennedy\, SOFO Environmental Educator \nThis program is for all ages. Advanced reservations are required for all events. \n  \n Sign Up Here!\n

SUMMARY:East End Environment Series: Sea Turtle Conservation with Maxine Montello
DESCRIPTION:Maxine Montello\, Executive Director of the New York Marine Rescue Center (NYMRC)\, will discuss the challenges facing sea turtles in New York waters\, including cold-stunning\, vessel strikes\, and entanglement. The presentation will highlight NYMRC’s work rehabilitating stranded and injured sea turtles\, as well as ongoing research efforts to better understand their health\, ecology\, and conservation needs. Maxine will also share findings from NYMRC’s research efforts\, using satellite telemetry to track rehabilitated sea turtles after release and examine their movements and cameras to understand behavior within New York waters. These efforts are helping to build a better understanding of where sea turtles go\, how they use New York’s coastal waters\, and what happens after rehabilitation\, providing important information for the conservation of these critical species. \nPresenter: Maxine Montello\, New York Marine Rescue Center Executive Director \nThis FREE program is for adults & children ages 8 and up. Advanced reservations are required for all events. \n  \n Sign Up Here!\n
