Walk Leader: Ashley Oliver, South Fork Natural History Museum (SoFo) Nature Educator
The Osprey is one of approximately two dozen birds of prey (raptors) on the South Fork. Starting in the 1960’s, the Osprey populations dramatically declined with an increase of pesticide accumulation in the environment. Luckily, the Osprey has a great comeback story! Closely watched populations of young osprey on Shelter Island and Gardiners Island have doubled within the last two years. Join Ashley on a walk to observe Osprey families and learn the story of their rebounding population. Please bring binoculars if you have them.
